BDSM This book was interesting。 It is not heavy spice but some towards the end of the book。 Lots of BDSM that is non sexual。 That was fine as the book is more educational than sexy。 The book deals with lots of child trama， so be ready for that。 The main characters were likable and you will be rooting for them throughout the book。 I wish we could have had more of the cop side of all this though。

I decided to give this book a try because it is an Amazon First Reads pick for January and was marketed as a dark romance。 My interest was piqued because I was curious about what a traditional publisher would consider qualifies for this subgenre。 In my opinion， this book doesn’t really fit the brief for dark or romance， though I guess it *kind of sort of* qualifies。 Don’t get me wrong， the subject matter lends itself to a darker tale， but the execution of said subject matter neighbors more on th I decided to give this book a try because it is an Amazon First Reads pick for January and was marketed as a dark romance。 My interest was piqued because I was curious about what a traditional publisher would consider qualifies for this subgenre。 In my opinion， this book doesn’t really fit the brief for dark or romance， though I guess it *kind of sort of* qualifies。 Don’t get me wrong， the subject matter lends itself to a darker tale， but the execution of said subject matter neighbors more on the thriller/suspense genres than the dark romance subgenre。 Speaking of which， the “romance” in this book is definitely not the A plot， and didn’t ever quite land for me。 I just didn’t buy it。 There are also a couple of super squidgy consent moments between the two of them that do not remotely work in the year of our lord， 2024。 The first is the first time they’re *together* （and that is a huge part of the plot so I get why the author wrote the scene）， but also the second time， when Rae isn’t sober。 Both instances just felt off and outdated， even though the first was in service of the plot。 The lack of Dayton’s POV and the inclusion of Echo as a past POV cemented that this is completely Rae’s story。 Which is fine… but that means it’s more thriller/suspense/women’s fiction with a romantic subplot than a straight romance。 Honestly， I don’t know what I would categorize this book as because it seems to want to achieve a lot of things。 Unfortunately， it never quite achieves any of them。 It became glaringly apparent that a white woman wrote this book because the characters of color were not portrayed with a lot of sensitivity or awareness。 It kind of felt like the author made Dayton’s character Indigenous just to service the narrative， without a thought to what the implications of writing an Indigenous character should or would mean。 The fact that he’s also a cop lends itself to this lack of cultural sensitivity and awareness。 To me， it all felt exploitative and appropriative。 And， while I greatly appreciated the author’s attempt to educate readers about the kink community， a lot of the text about said community and its practices felt like info dumping。 There was a LOT of telling in this book instead of showing， which was okay to read through the first couple of times， but was decidedly less charming as the story went on。 In the end， this book didn’t really work for me。 Perhaps if it had been marketed differently， I would have had different expectations going in， and that might have made reading it slightly more enjoyable。 But then again， given its other issues， probably not。 。。。more

Gripping in partsThis was definitely a bit darker in parts than I was expecting and a lot less spicy than expected too。There were some real page turner moments but then also moments that seemed to drag on or were unnecessary。I finished it within the space a day so clearly not a bad read at all。 Just maybe not the book for me。

What an interesting and thrilling book…had suspense， a touch of spice and humor all wrapped into one。 We are treated to the main character’s past and present POV。 Loved the MC…she was blunt and bad ass while encouraging sexual fantasies， hahaha！ What a combination！ I definitely recommend this book。 Hopefully there’ll be audiobook version 🤞Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the gifted ARC…as all opinions are my own。

I really enjoyed this book。 I loved how it went back and to from past and present。 Rae the main character has suffered a life of trauma and is based off all parts of her life colliding。 At 91% I felt I was still in the middle of the story and did feel the ending was rushed and could have done with a bit more tension。 However I really enjoyed this and needed more at the end of each chapter！
